Nelson Scott Simpson broke into the wrestling business in 1984, when hating Russians was all the rage. Since he didn’t have that much wrestling training, he decided to compensate by immersing himself into the “Russian Nightmare” Nikita Koloff character. He legally changed his name to Nikita Koloff and didn’t speak anything but pretend-Russian and 11 words of broken English for an entire year, even when the cameras were off. He even used an “interpreter” when renting an apartment and never broke character until his retirement in 1992, holding on to the Russian accent for two more years.
