10 Biggest Unscripted Disasters in Wrestling History

Most wrestling fans know about the Montreal screwjob because it’s one of the most infamous off-script disasters in wrestling history. Brett Hart didn’t want to lose his WWF title in his home country at Survivor Series 1997, so Vince McMahon agreed to let him lose it on RAW the following night. Problem was, Brett was set to jump ship to WCW and McMahon wasn’t taking any chances after Alundra Blayze took the Women’s title with her and put it in the trash on an episode of WCW Nitro. Vince ended up doing the only thing he could – he came out to the ring during Survivor Series and told the officials to delcare Shawm Michaels winner, despite Brett not tapping to the Sharpshooter that Michaels had on him.

This match will always be a stain on the Hart/McMahon relationship, but it did work out for Vince McMahon much better than he planned. The controversy from the match allowed Vince McMahon’s on-screen character to evolve into the evil boss we all know and love. This kicked off the Attitude Era and turned the company around as it was getting destroyed by WCW in ratings.
